Park Adventures and Safety: 10 Tips to Keep Your Toddler Smiling and Safe!

May 15, 2023      Porsha Carr

Hi guys! What’s up? Today we’re taking all about toddlers and parks. As most of you know I have a very playful 16 month old Riley. Riley loves being outside and of course the “pash” (park). Taking your toddler to the park is a wonderful way to let them explore, play, and develop their motor skills. However, it’s important to prioritize their safety to ensure their park experience is enjoyable and accident-free. In this blog post, I will share ten essential tips to help you keep your toddler safe while they have fun at the park.

10 tips every parent should know.

  1. Supervision is Key: Always keep a close eye on your toddler while they’re at the park. Children at this age are curious and can be unpredictable, so staying nearby will allow you to respond quickly if any potential dangers arise. Some parents even go as far as putting an Apple air tag on their child. Hey whatever works I’m here for it!

  2. Choose Age-Appropriate Play Areas: Select play areas that are specifically designed for toddlers. These areas usually have age-appropriate equipment with safety features such as low platforms, secure railings, and soft landing surfaces. Sometimes Riley likes to go to the big kid side. It’s okay to let them explore. But again remember always stay close.
  3. Inspect the Park: Before letting your toddler loose, take a moment to assess the park’s condition. Look for broken equipment, sharp edges, or any potential hazards. Notify park authorities if you come across any safety concerns.
  4. Dress Your Toddler Appropriately: Ensure your toddler wears comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes to the park. Avoid clothing with long strings or loose accessories that could get caught in equipment. I try to avoid sandals because she gets bark in them. But they’re her favorite shoes.
  5. Apply Sunscreen and Bug Repellent: Protect your toddler’s delicate skin by applying sunscreen with a high SPF and reapply it as needed. Use child-friendly bug repellent to ward off insects that may be present in outdoor park areas. I prefer the spray.
  6. Teach Proper Playground Behavior: Educate your toddler about appropriate park behavior, such as taking turns, not pushing or shoving, and being aware of other children. Encourage them to communicate and seek assistance if they need it. It can be hard at such a young age but doable.
  7. Stay Hydrated: Bring a water bottle for your toddler and encourage them to drink regularly, especially on hot days. Dehydration can occur quickly, so it’s crucial to keep your little one hydrated during park visits.
  8. Use Protective Gear: Consider using safety gear like helmets and knee pads when your toddler is playing on bikes, scooters, or other wheeled toys. This can provide an extra layer of protection in case of falls or collisions. We aren’t here in toddlerhood yet.
  9. Be Mindful of Hot Equipment: During warm weather, playground equipment exposed to the sun can become scorching hot and potentially burn your toddler’s skin. Test the temperature of slides, swings, and other equipment before allowing your child to use them. Even under areas that are shaded.
  10. Stay Vigilant Near Water Areas: If the park has a water feature, such as a splash pad or wading pool, ensure your toddler is always within arm’s reach. Even shallow water can pose a drowning risk, so stay alert and closely supervise your child.

The park doesn’t have to be stressful.

With these ten essential tips, you can create a safe environment for your toddler to enjoy their time at the park. Remember, maintaining close supervision, choosing age-appropriate play areas, and teaching proper park behavior are key to ensuring your child’s safety. By following these guidelines, you can foster a fun and secure park experience for your toddler, allowing them to develop their skills and create lasting memories. Have fun friends!
