Fighting Brest Cancer With Notonetype.org.

February 3, 2020      Porsha Carr

“This post is sponsored by; Genentech however, all thoughts and opinions are my own.”

Question;
what do the words breast cancer mean to you? what do you know about it?  Many people may be surprised by the fact that breast cancer can affect any woman, regardless of factors like her age or overall health. While every October we see a “pink wave” of brands and products raising awareness for breast cancer, the disease greatly impacts women and their loved ones all year round. I’m thankful for NotOneType.org, a campaign that was created by Living Beyond Breast Cancer and Genentech, encouraging all women to take a closer look at breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women. Last year alone it claimed the lives of 41,000 women in the United States. My aunt is currently fighting her battle right now, my grandmother in law is recovering from her own battle at the moment and my grandmother went through the same thing some years ago. Unfortunately, this disease doesn’t care who you are, it doesn’t care how wonderful a person you are it does not discriminate. Breast cancer has so many misconceptions about it and so many things we all don’t know. But one thing is for sure today, right here and right now we will work together to learn more, what we can do and how we can change the narrative.

Not One Type is a great resource that was created to help all of us understand that breast cancer will differently impact the lives of every individual who is diagnosed. Unfortunately at some time during our lives, we may know someone or be that someone who is diagnosed with breast cancer. As hard as it is to think about it is important that we educate ourselves about the disease. Not One Type’s website is full of useful information like statistics, questions to ask your doctor, and testimonies from real women. Most importantly it is here to help us understand the biggest picture. See actual screengrabs from the site below.

So what’s the bigger picture? That breast cancer complex. Breast cancer isn’t only for older women. No! Breast cancer can affect younger women, teens, college students, young mothers. No one is safe because of their age. Breast cancer is also not only pink and doesn’t only deserve to be talked about in October. Guilty! when October rolls around I will admit I was all for the pink tutus, pink nails, pink crowns. I thought if I supported this color during this month I was making a change. While my efforts were put forth with a good heart that’s not all there is to this disease. The inundation of pink during October leads people to perceive breast cancer as all the same. That also doesn’t change the fact that it’s around 365 days of the year. Not One Type helps us recognize this all year around. It helps us focus on this not only for a month but for life.

The first thing I noticed when I visited NotOneType.org was the lack of pink and any of the cliché themes associated with breast cancer awareness. I immediately noticed no pink and no one-size-fits-all narrative. I felt good browsing around the site getting to learn new facts and watching videos of the women.

Breast Cancer. At the beginning of this post, I asked you what do the words breast cancer mean to you? Does it still mean the same thing now?

If you or a loved one has questions about breast cancer be sure to check out NotOneType.org.
Thank you for reading friends.
