Hi friends! You know there are certain milestones as a parent that just hit you in the heart and Ivy passing her S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer test at SafeSplash Swim School was definitely one of them.
Both Ivy and Riley swim there as most of you know, and it has been one of the best decisions we’ve made for their confidence and safety around water. Living in California, being around pools, beaches, vacations, and friends’ houses, water safety isn’t optional it’s essential. And that’s exactly why the S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer program means so much.
What Is the S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer Test?
At SafeSplash, the S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer test is designed to make sure a child can independently and safely navigate the water. It’s not just about swimming across the pool it’s about proving they understand survival skills and can stay calm, controlled, and confident.
To pass, swimmers typically have to:
• Jump into the water independently
• Fully submerge and recover to the surface
• Roll to their back and float
• Swim a set distance (usually the full length of the pool) using proper technique
• Demonstrate controlled breathing
• Exit the pool safely on their own
It’s about real-life water safety skills not just strokes.
If a child doesn’t pass the S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer Test within one year assuming they attend lessons regularly and meet the attendance requirements SafeSplash will provide up to two months of free group swim lessons at no cost to help the swimmer keep progressing until they do pass. These extra lessons stop once the student successfully completes the S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer Test or when the two months end, whichever comes first. This Promise is designed to support each child in mastering the essential water safety skills without extra financial stress for parents along the way. Isn’t that so cool?
Ivy’s Test Day
Ivy had been working toward this for weeks. Every lesson, her instructors were refining her technique straight legs, strong kicks, big arms, controlled breathing. They also focused a lot on endurance and making sure she could stay calm if she got tired.
On test day, she was excited but nervous that kind of nervous where you can tell they really care. I stood there trying to act calm (but internally I was way more anxious than she was).
She walked to the edge of the pool, listened carefully to her instructor’s directions, and when they told her to go, she jumped in confidently. No hesitation.
She went fully underwater, popped back up, rolled to her back, and floated with control which is such a huge safety skill. Then she flipped back over and started swimming the full length of the pool. Her kicks were strong, her arms were reaching, and she remembered to turn her head to breathe instead of lifting it up.
About halfway through, I could see her focus lock in. She didn’t rush. She didn’t panic. She just kept going.
When she reached the wall and climbed out by herself, her instructor smiled and I knew. She passed. Mom’s know!
The pride on her face was everything. It wasn’t just about swimming. It was about confidence. It was about knowing she can handle herself in the water.
Why This Matters So Much
Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death in children, and that’s a statistic no parent wants to think about. Programs like the S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer test create layers of protection. Of course, supervision is always first but knowing Ivy has the skills to float, breathe, and get herself to safety adds a level of peace I can’t even explain.
Ivy received her S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer necklace, got to ring the bell and got her name on the S.A.F.E.R. Swimmer Star wall. All which identifies that she has passed. And let me tell you she rocks it all with pride.
Watching her grow from hesitant in the water to strong and independent has been incredible. And Riley? She’s watching big sister closely. I already know she’s motivated to pass hers when the time comes too.
SafeSplash has been such a positive experience for our family. The instructors are patient, structured, and truly care about the kids progressing safely and confidently.
This wasn’t just a swim test.
It was a milestone.
And I am one proud mama. Go Ivy! 💙
