Hi guys! How do you encourage creativity in your kids? Introducing a world of imagination and creativity not only into your kids’ but also their playroom. In this step-by-step guide, I’ll walk you through the process of transforming a blank wall into an interactive canvas for your children’s artistic adventures. Whether you’re a seasoned DIY enthusiast or a first-time creator, this project is a fantastic opportunity to personalize a play space. Let’s just right in!

DIY Chalk wall.
Step 1: Prep the Wall
Start by measuring the area you want to paint. I only did the bottom half off the wall so I needed measurements. Next tape off the the wall using painter’s tape to create a clean line. This will define the area for your chalk wall. Use your screwdriver and remove any electrical outlets and tape those as well.
Step 2: Apply All-Purpose Joint Compound
Using a putty knife, apply an even layer of all-purpose joint compound to the wall. Smooth it out as much as possible to create a surface for the chalkboard paint to adhere to. Since I was pregnant and couldn’t use an electric sander, I opted for a handheld sander to smooth the compound, but an electric sander can be used for a faster process.
Step 3: Paint with Chalkboard Paint
Once the joint compound is dry and smooth, it’s time to paint. Lay out your drop clothes or plastic sheets for floor protection. Use a high-quality chalkboard paint and apply the first coat evenly over the entire surface. Allow it to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and then apply 2-3 coats in total for better coverage. Make sure to let each coat dry before applying the next one.
Step 4: Allow Drying Time
After applying the final coat of chalkboard paint, allow the wall to dry for at least 72 hours. This will ensure that the paint fully cures and adheres to the wall.
Step 5: Condition the Chalk Wall
To condition the chalk wall and prevent ghosting, take a piece of chalk and rub it all over the surface. This creates a layer of chalk dust that will make erasing easier. Once you’ve covered the entire surface, erase the chalk with an eraser or a dry cloth.
Step 6: Enjoy the Chalk Wall
Your DIY chalk wall is now ready for use! The kids can start drawing and playing on it immediately. Watch as their creativity flows and they have endless fun with their new interactive play space.
Enjoy your wall.
The chalk wall isn’t the easiest project but it’s not the hardest either. I didn’t do the best job ever but at 8.5 months pregnant I think I did a good job! Remember, safety first! Make sure the room is well-ventilated when working with joint compound and paint, use your goggles, mask and gloves and take breaks as needed. Enjoy the process and the joy it brings to your kids’ playroom! Almost 2 years later and my girls still love it and I hope your kids do too!
