How To Be Prepared For A Fire Emergency With First Alert.

October 14, 2019      Porsha Carr

Thank you First Alert for sponsoring this post. October is National Fire Prevention Month and is the perfect time to gather your family and discuss fire safety.
Hi friends!
Are you aware that the month of October is National Fire Prevention Month? Yes, an entire month dedicated to fire safety. Since we are in the month of October what better time to talk about preparing for a fire than now? I know my family did! This month is a great time to do just that and with the help of my friends over at First Alert I am going to help your family get prepared too.

First Alert is dedicated to helping families prevent fires in their home or in the event of a fire helping them to prepare getting through the worst. First Alert believes that every family should be safe in their home rather their house is big, small, a single home, townhome, duplex or even an apartment home like ours. The number one way to prepare for a fire emergency is to have a checklist so below I have included a list of 5 fire safety tips.
1. Install Smoke and Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms: Having these two alarms are pivotal in fire safety. A fire doesn’t discriminate and can easily start in any room, any day or anytime. Having both alarms in every room can alert you and your family soon as a fire has started.

2.  Always Test Your Alarms: Testing your alarms on a regular basis will ensure that they are properly working to keep you and your family safe.
3. Battery Changing: While testing your alarm you may find that you may need a new battery. It’s imperative to change your batteries every six months. That’s only twice a year and it only takes minutes. With First Alert, you can actually upgrade your alarms to a 10 year sealed battery. This will eliminate battery replacements for a while. Though it’s important to keep in mind alarms will not last forever and should be replaced every 10 years.

4. Keep A Fire Extinguisher: Most families don’t think to have one of these but if a fire does break out having an extinguisher on hand could possibly help put it out. Keep one in every room and especially in the kitchen. Did you know that the number one cause of fires are actually unattended cooking?

5.  Have A Plan And Know It: When a fire breaks out the last thing anyone wants to do is worry about where their loved ones are. That’s why having a plan and practicing it can actually save your lives. Get with your family at least two times a year and practice safely getting out of your home and practice where to safely meet away from the fire once you have exited. This is especially important when you have little ones or pets. Practice! Practice! Practice!

Well, my friends there you have it. 5 important things that every family should have on their fire safety checklist. Three out of five deaths, unfortunately, occur in home fires that either did not have smoke alarms or working alarms. Please help prevent that by having and testing your alarms, keeping your extinguisher close and knowing your escape plan like the back of your hand.
